Revealed: How China killed off discussion on the web...

Research commissioned by the Telegraph shows that the number of posts on the hugely successful Twitter-like microblog may have fallen by as much as 70 per cent in the wake of an aggressive campaign by the Communist party to intimidate influential users.

..But that was the same month that the Communist party struck its first major blow against Weibo, requiring users to register their real names with the service. From that point, those wishing to criticise the Party had to do so without the comforting blanket of anonymity and users started to rein themselves in.

...Over the following months, the Party gradually tightened its censorship of the service, deleting the accounts of activists and instituting a 'five strikes-and-out rule’,which suspended the accounts of anyone posting five “sensitive” tweets for 48 hours. In June last year, however, the Party changed tack. To great effect, it began arresting hundreds of users posting “rumours” on Weibo...

Yahoo! is urging users of its Mail service to change their passwords to something secure and unique to the web giant – after a security breach exposed account login details to theft.

Vodka blamed for high death rates in Russia

The high number of early deaths in Russia is mainly due to people drinking too much alcohol, particularly vodka, research shows. The study, in The Lancet, says 25% of Russian men die before they are 55, and most of the deaths are down to alcohol.

The comparable UK figure is 7%. Causes of death include liver disease and alcohol poisoning. Many also die in accidents or after getting into fights.

Elementary school deprives students of food due to outstanding lunch bills...

It sounds like a scene out of a Charles Dickens novel: 40 children served lunch, only to have cafeteria workers take their meals and toss them in the trash.

That’s what happened on Tuesday at Uintah Elementary in Salt Lake City, as the district’s child-nutrition department took drastic measures to get parents to pay the outstanding balance on their lunch bills.

NY Post: ‘Jay Z a poor excuse for a husband’

What do you call a man who stands there smiling and singing as his scantily clad wife straddles a chair and shakes her rear end for other men’s titillation?

I’m certain if I look through enough Jay Z song titles, I’ll come up with the right name for his role in Beyoncé’s performance at the Grammy Awards Sunday night. Rhymes with Goodyear. . . ? Well, how about I just call him a poor excuse for a husband.

Antioxidants including vitamin E can promote lung cancer: study

The discovery of how antioxidants thwart cells' innate cancer-fighting machinery might explain why a groundbreaking 1994 study found an 18 percent higher incidence of lung cancer among 29,133 male smokers who received beta carotene than those who did not. The result was so unexpected and unwelcome that the editorial in the journal where it was published tried to dismiss it as "an extreme play of chance."

"It's disappointing but not surprising that people's beliefs are not modified by scientific evidence," said Dr Paul Marantz, an epidemiologist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. "People so want to believe there is a magic bullet out there."

Once-In-a-Generation Storm - The Big Icy: Deep freeze down to Gulf Coast

The Deep South will be plunged into a deep freeze again this week, this time with ice and snow expected to fall all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.Forecasters issued a winter storm warning for New Orleans and its suburbs Monday afternoon, warning that the city could see half an inch of snow and ice by Tuesday evening.

Parishes further north could see three inches, with temperatures plunging into the single digits on Wednesday, the National Weather Service reported.A wave of arctic air that settled over the Midwest and the Plains is expected to spread into the Southeast late Monday, bringing a chance of snow to several major Southern cities by Tuesday.

In New Orleans, where measurable snow has fallen only 17 times in records that date back to the 1880s, French Quarter restaurants made plans to shut down and tourists worried about being stranded at the city’s airport.

Creepy Facebook asks to read users' text messages...

Over the last month or so, a few keen-eyed Android users may have been startled by some peculiar permission requests when they tried to update their Facebook app.

One request asks to “read your text messages (SMS or MMS).”That’s not exactly the kind of language users are likely to find reassuring, especially after recent allegations that Facebook has been scanning private messages within the social network.

So, Facebook is currently on a PR offensive to calm user fears. “We realize that some of these permissions sound scary,” writes Facebook. “So we’d like to provide more info about how we use them … If you add a phone number to your account, this allows us to confirm your phone number automatically by finding the confirmation code that we send via text message.

”Make of those assurances what you will, and you can read more about the other permissions here. Indeed, as one Reddit user point out, Facebook has been asking for these SMS permissions for quite some time...

SHOCK CLAIM: Mouthwash Increases Risk of Heart Attack, Stroke...

Used by millions of Britons every day, they can increase blood pressure by killing off “good” bacteria that help blood vessels relax.Professor Amrita Ahluwalia, of Queen Mary, University of London, said: “Killing off all these bugs each day is a disaster when small rises in blood pressure have significant impact on morbidity and mortality from heart disease and stroke.

“We are not telling people to stop using antiseptic mouthwashes if they have a gum or tooth infection but we would ask why anyone else would want to.”

The shocking findings come as sales of mouthwash are booming. A third of adults use it, according to the British Dental Health Foundation, creating a market worth more than £150million a year.

The study, published in the journal Free Radical Biology And Medicine, tracked the blood pressure of 19 healthy people who started using Corsodyl twice a day.Their blood pressure shot up by between 2 and 3.5 units. For each two-point rise in blood pressure, the risk of dying from heart disease rises by seven per cent and the risk of dying from stroke by 10 per cent.

News Limited: OK Australia. Enough is enough. Stop whingeing on social media every time something ticks you off. No one wants to live in a nanny-nation.... To be clear, we're not suggesting that you stop being critical of what you see and hear. But if people keep whining every time something offends them, we'll be known as the nation who 'cried wolf'. And when issues that really matter surface, no one will stop to hear us.... www.news.com.au

GOLD COAST woman slugged with $3000 in parking fees... At new $1.76 billion hospital

A GOLD Coast woman has been slugged a "sickening" $3000 in parking fees while visiting her dying partner in the Glitter Strip's new $1.76 billion hospital.

As if caring for her cancer-stricken partner of 35 years was not tough enough, disability worker Michelle Sullivan was forced to pay $990 a month to park at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

A Gold Coast Health Service spokeswoman admitted hospital parking was a "challenge" for patients and staff, who also have to pay to park.

The Oldest Hebrew Inscription from Jerusalem has been deciphered

The Oldest Hebrew Inscription from Jerusalem has been deciphered

Professor Gershon Galil, from the Department of Biblical Studies and Jewish History, University of Haifa, in Israel, who has deciphered the inscription, pointed out that it indicates writing abilities as well as the existence of an administration which collects taxes, prepare storage places and jars, and takes care of the workers in Jerusalem, as early as the second half of the 10th century BC, probably in the reign of King Solomon.

Prof. Galil also said that the new inscription indicates that large quantities of inferior wine were used in Jerusalem: "This cheap wine was not served on Solomon's table, nor used in the Temple. So it is reasonable to suppose that it was served to the hard workers that were engaged in the large scale building projects in Jerusalem, and maybe also to the soldiers who served there. The logistics needed were probably concentrated in the Ophel. Inferior wine was also served to the Cypriot mercenaries in Arad, and in later periods to workers and soldiers in the Hellenistic and Roman periods". The inscription also teaches us that there were scribes in Jerusalem who were able to write texts as early as the second half of the 10th century BC. The registration of the wine and its storage indicate the existence of an administration which collected taxes, prepared storage places and jars, and took care of the workers in Jerusalem, fed them and served them water and even inferior wine. "Scribes that were able to write administrative texts are also able to compose literary and historiographical texts (as clearly demonstrated recently by the Qeiyafa inscription). This fact is of major importance for reconstructing the process of the crystallization of the Bible, and even more for the understanding of the History of Israel and Jerusalem in Biblical times", summarized Prof. Galil.

Numbers of Mean and Hungry Monster Sharks are increasing in Australias Queensland...

THE state's top shark hunter says a spike in monster sharks caught off Queensland shows the deadly predators are thriving in our waters.

More "dangerous" specimens larger than 2m were hooked last year than in any year since 2010, a comparison of available data shows.

The government's Shark Control Programcaptured 686 sharks in 2013 - fewer than the previous year - but more were at the big end of the scale. Most were tiger sharks (248), followed by bull whalers (137) and great whites (6) and the largest was a 4.72m tiger shark off Yaroomba on the Sunshine Coast....

Is this proof near-death experiences ARE real? Extraordinary new book by intensive care nurse reveals dramatic evidence she says should banish our fear of dying...

....But, in the end, I decided to embark on a PhD on near-death experiences, while continuing to work in intensive care.

I began my eight-year study as a cynic. But by the time it ended, I was convinced that near-death experiences are a genuine phenomenon. So what exactly is a near-death experience? At its simplest, it’s a clear and memorable vision that occurs when people are close to death — though only a small percentage of us will have one.

Researchers now agree that each vision will contain at least one of several recognised components, such as travelling down a tunnel towards a bright light, meeting dead relatives, or having an out-of-body experience. As the person ‘leaves’ his body, he may hear a buzzing, whistling, whirring or humming sound, or a click. Another common component of NDEs is a beautiful garden with lush green grass and vividly coloured flowers.

There may be a stream or river in the background. Some people enter the garden, while others reach a gate or barrier — and know that they’ll die if they go through it. Throughout an NDE, hearing and sight become more acute, and awareness is heightened. Often, the experience has been described to me as ‘realer than real’...

Or could there be far more to approaching death than scientists have ever acknowledged?

    More of this fascinating story..

In a different age the family might have appealed for help by putting up posters around the shopping centre where Bunny was last seen, or on lamp-posts along the route home near Redhill in Surrey.  Instead, the power of 21st century social media - and the efforts of tens of thousands of strangers - got there first to bring Bunny and Daisy back together!

4000-Year Old Tablet Reveals New Details About Noah's Ark...

British Museum: Prototype for Noah's Ark was round

But forget all those images of a long vessel with a pointy bow — the original Noah’s Ark, new research suggests, was round.

A recently deciphered 4,000-year-old clay tablet from ancient Mesopotamia — modern-day Iraq — reveals striking new details about the roots of the Old Testament tale of Noah. It tells a similar story, complete with detailed instructions for building a giant round vessel known as a coracle — as well as the key instruction that animals should enter “two by two.”

The tablet went on display at the British Museum on Friday, and soon engineers will follow the ancient instructions to see whether the vessel could actually have sailed.

STUDY: Cancer-Causing Chemical Found In Soft Drinks...

Soft Drinks Contain Cancer Causing Chemical

    4-MEI Cancer Chemical Soft Drinks
Carcinogen Known As 4-MEI Has Been Found In Caramel Coloring In Colas, Others

There was a warning issued Thursday about the soft drinks you and your children may be consuming every day. Consumer Reports says some of them contain a possible cancer-causing chemical, CBS 2’s Dr. Max Gomez reported.

The issue is with the caramel coloring in many soft drinks. It is what gives them their brown color. Some contain a possible human carcinogen.

Cola is one of the most popular soft drinks in the country, but now a study from Consumer Reports says that the caramel coloring additive that gives cola — and many other soft drinks — its brown color, can contain a harmful chemical called 4-methylimidazole, or 4-MEI.

“It was in fact … definitely causes cancer in animal studies. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has also classified 4-MEI as a possible human carcinogen,” Dr. Urvashi Rangan said.

“Coke came in at a negligible cancer level at one can of Coke. That said, we found other manufacturers — like Pepsi — really quite a lot higher than Coke,” Dr. Rangan said.

NZ dollar to pass Aust dollar: HSBC

New Zealand has begun an economic boom that could drive its currency past Australia's for the first time in four decades, HSBC Bank Australia says.

The bank rates the rebuilding of earthquake-damaged Christchurch - one of three things driving the economy - as an economic force as important to New Zealand as the resources boom of the last decade was to Australia's economy.

"New Zealand is set for a strong 2014, with the economy already firing on all cylinders," Adam Richardson and Paul Bloxham of HSBC Bank Australia say in a report.

Letterman's Top 10 Reasons to Vote Democrat in 2014

    10. I’ll vote Democrat because I love the fact that I can now marry whom and whatever I want.  I've decided to marry my German Shepherd.

    9. I’ll vote Democrat because I believe oil company's profits of 4% on a gallon of gas are obscene, but the government taxing the same gallon of gas at 15% isn't.

    8. I’ll vote Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would.

    7. I’ll vote Democrat because Freedom of Speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.

    6. I’ll vote Democrat because I'm way too irresponsible to own a gun, and I know that my local police are all I need to protect me from murderers and thieves. I am also thankful that we have a 911 service that get police to your home in order to identify your body after a home invasion.

    5. I’ll vote Democrat because I'm not concerned about millions of babies being aborted so long as we keep all death row inmates alive and comfy.

    4. I’ll vote Democrat because I think illegal aliens have a right to free health care, education, and Social Security benefits, and we should take away the Social Security from those who paid into it.

    3. I’ll vote Democrat because I believe that businesses should NOT be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as the Democrats see fit.

    2. I’ll vote Democrat because I believe liberal judges need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit some fringe kooks who would never get their agendas past the voters.

and the No. 1 reason I'll vote Democrat is:

    1. I’ll vote Democrat because I think that it's better to pay billions for their oil to people who hate us, but not drill our own because it might upset some endangered beetle, gopher, fish or frog.

After bright explosion, astronomers rush to study new supernova

Overnight, astronomers spotted what may be a very close white dwarf supernova—close in cosmic terms at least.

This bright explosion, seen in the M82 "Cigar" galaxy, is roughly 12 million light-years away—close enough to be seen with small telescopes and observed in detail by larger instruments.

Even amateur astronomers and astrophotographers can see an explosion this bright and close.

Type Ia supernovae are triggered either by the explosion of white dwarfs that accrete too much matter and exceed their maximum stable mass, or by the collision of two white dwarfs. (That's as opposed to core-collapse supernovae, which are the explosions of stars much more massive than the Sun.) Because they all explode in very similar ways, Type Ia supernovas are "standard candles": objects that can be used to measure distances to very distant galaxies. The use of them to track the expansion of the Universe was recognized by the 2011 Nobel Prize.

MOSCOW — Police have killed a senior Islamist militant in a shootout in Russia’s North Caucasus ahead of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, the National Anti-terror Committee said on Tuesday.

US Study: Nearly half of black men arrested by age 23

NEW YORK —Nearly 50 percent of black men and 40 percent of white men are arrested at least once on non-traffic-related crimes by the time they turn 23, according to a new study.

One of the authors of the study published this month in the journal "Crime & Delinquency" said the statistics could be useful in shaping policy so that people aren't haunted by arrests when they apply for jobs, schools or public housing.

"Many, many people are involved with the criminal justice system at this level," said Shawn Bushway, a University at Albany criminologist. "And treating them all as if they're hardened criminals is a serious mistake."

Brrrrr... Temperatures hit -41 in Swedish cold snap..

Residents living in far northern Sweden woke up to a temperature of -41.2 C on Sunday as the harsh winter continues to bite across the rest of the country.

The village of Karesuando, right at the very northern tip of Sweden, clocked the epic cold temperature during Sunday reports the Swedish weather agency SMHI. "It is also a seasonal record," said SMHI meteorologist Lars Unnerstad to the TT news agency. The recorded temperature of -41.2 was a record for that region which is right on the Finnish border. http://m.thelocal.se//20140119/temperatures-hit-41-in-swedish-cold-snap

Cool! 'Big chill' expected to stay until 2040...

Major cooling cycle could match 'Little Ice Age'

As the largest snowfall of the winter hits the eastern U.S., politicians and interest groups will claim the latest weather is proof of their position in the climate debate, but a prominent climatologist says this is nothing more than the latest development in a cooling cycle that started over a decade ago and could continue into 2040.

Climate-change activists regularly assert that volatile weather events are on the rise due to human activity that impacts our climate, while skeptics point to the snow and cold snaps as further proof the earth is not running a fever.

Dr. Tim Ball taught climatology for many years at the University of Winnipeg and is the author of the newly released book, “The Deliberate Corruption of Climate Science.” He told WND it’s foolhardy to draw conclusions on overall climate trends based on one weather system or even one winter, but he believes the harsher winter is part of a cooling cycle.

Obama 'threatens Fox News reporter's career...

Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteren charges that the Obama administration tried to press her to shut down a colleague’s reporting on the jihadist attack in Benghazi, Libya, that cost the lives of a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

Van Susteren asserted recently on her blog that the administration made an extensive effort to conceal what happened in Benghazi.

She cited U.S. officials’ refusal to include the Fox News Channel in several Benghazi briefings along with a warning that her colleague’s career would be ruined if she persisted in her reporting on the attack.

Inside the secret Chinese camps curing internet addiction

The addicts, who mostly are brought in against their will by their parents, stay in barren and bleak cells at night, completely cut off from electronics. Except when they are wired up to machines so psychologists can observe their brain activity.

Then, during the day, they sit like specimens in front of a panel of doctors in white coats as they try to reprogram their subject.

The brains of older people only appear to slow down because they have so much information to compute, much like a full-up hard drive, scientists believe.

Older people do not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains, scientists believe.Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full up, so to do humans take longer to access information, it has been suggested. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/10584927/Brains-of-elderly-slow-because-they-know-so-much.html
