Antioxidants including vitamin E can promote lung cancer: study

The discovery of how antioxidants thwart cells' innate cancer-fighting machinery might explain why a groundbreaking 1994 study found an 18 percent higher incidence of lung cancer among 29,133 male smokers who received beta carotene than those who did not. The result was so unexpected and unwelcome that the editorial in the journal where it was published tried to dismiss it as "an extreme play of chance."

"It's disappointing but not surprising that people's beliefs are not modified by scientific evidence," said Dr Paul Marantz, an epidemiologist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. "People so want to believe there is a magic bullet out there."

Why evening exercise might be better for you

Previous work from China's Nanjing Medical University suggests that exercise later in the day has more benefits for health, particularly cholesterol.

The reasons are unclear why its better to have your work out later in the day than morning, but may be linked to changes in metabolism throughout the day.

The same team are now conducting a larger trial of 300 people - half of whom will walk in the morning and half later in the day.

Lipsticks, Glosses Contain Toxic Metals: Report

Lipsticks and lip glosses apparently give you more than colorful kissers, according to a new study by California scientists that contends the products contain lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum and five other toxic metals. The research team tested 32 different lip glosses and lipsticks commonly sold at drug and department stores.

Some metals were detected at levels that could raise potential health concerns, the researchers said.

“Lipsticks and lip glosses often have levels of toxic metals which approach or exceed acceptable daily doses based on public health guidelines,” said researcher Katharine Hammond, a professor of environmental health sciences at the University of California, Berkeley.

Secret to longer life may be in your brain..

Scientists said Wednesday they had found a brain region that controls physical ageing, and could target it to manipulate the lifespan of lab mice.

The research, published in the journal Nature, implicates the hypothalamus -- a brain region that regulates growth, reproduction and metabolism, in the gradual and coordinated bodily deterioration we call ageing.

The findings may be a step towards finding the holy grail of slowing human ageing, but have yet to be tested in human subjects.
