US vows to defend Japan against China

Washington (AFP) - Secretary of State John Kerry vowed Friday that the United States would defend Japan against attack including over islands claimed by China as tensions boil between the Asian powers.

Kerry, who said he would visit China next week, met in Washington with Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and reaffirmed the 1960 treaty that commits the United States to protect its ally.

H7N9 bird flu virus: Hong Kong culls 20,000 chickens

Hong Kong has begun culling 20,000 chickens after the H7N9 bird flu virus was found in poultry imported from mainland China.

All chickens at the wholesale market where the positive test took place were to be destroyed, the government said.

A Chinese zoo's supposed "African lion" was exposed as a fraud when the dog used as a substitute started barking.The zoo in the People's Park of Luohe, in the central province of Henan, replaced exotic exhibits with common species, according to the state-run Beijing Youth Daily.It quoted a customer surnamed Liu who wanted to show her son the different sounds animals made -- but he pointed out that the animal in the cage labelled "African lion" was barking.The beast was in fact a Tibetan mastiff -- a large and long-haired breed of dog.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) -- Australian officials on Tuesday refused to confirm or deny whether Chinese hackers had stolen the blueprints of a new spy agency headquarters as a news report claims.

A tiny party essential to the ruling coalition's government demanded an inquiry into how much damage may have been done.Australian Broadcasting Corp. television reported on Monday night that the plans for the 630 million Australian dollar ($608 million) Australian Security Intelligence Organization building had been stolen through a cyberattack on a building contractor.

Blueprints that included details such as communications cabling, server locations and security systems had been traced to a Chinese server, the network reported.

Russia’s chief public health official Gennady Onishchenko has recommended the country’s nationals not to visit China where a new strain of bird flu is spreading.

“Now there’s not need to ban [visits to China] but please do not go there if there is such a chance,” Onishchenko said on Echo Moskvy radio.He said over 130 people are infected with H7N9 avian influenza in China, and 26 of them have died.Onishchenko said in April that his consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor was considering restrictions on poultry meat imports from China.
