Spectacular Boat Blaze Off Surfer's Paradise

THE skipper and deckhand on a trawler working off the Gold Coast last night had to jump for their lives when the 16m vessel caught fire. The pair took to a dinghy as flames from the fire, which apparently started in the engine bay of the NSW-registered trawler Jabrien, engulfed the vessel. The fire could be seen for several kilometres, prompting many Coast residents, particularly those in high rises, to phone emergency services.

The drama happened about 6pm, four nautical miles north-east of Mermaid Beach when the skipper noticed smoke coming from the trawler's engine room.Gold Coast Water Police sergeant Tony Nelson said water police and Volunteer Marine Rescue crews were called to the blazing vessel and arrived to find it well alight."The skipper noticed smoke coming from the engine bay and when he opened it, he was engulfed by smoke," said Sgt Nelson.
