QUEENSLAND Police Union spokesman Simon Tutt came under fire two weeks ago for telling BBC that the Gold Coast was Australia's crime capital.

Local tourism and business leaders slammed Tutt's 'crime capital' comments, with Gold Coast Tourism chairman Paul Donovan describing the BBC documentary as 'a beat-up'."Calling the Gold Coast the crime capital is absolute bunkum,'' Mr Donovan, who is also Gold Coast Airport chief, told The Courier-Mail."What about Sydney and Melbourne? We're not the crime capital; these are isolated incidents that are being controlled by the police."Everyone wants to bash the Gold Coast because they're jealous of the great lifestyle we've got here.

Every place in the world has (crime) issues, we can't deny that. But the Gold Coast is the most fantastic place to live and holiday.''Mr Tutt, however, stands by his comments....
