Gay marriage opponents face prosecution, Faculty of Advocates warns

Clergymen, parents and teachers could be taken to court for opposing gay marriage, legal experts warned yesterday as SNP ministers unveiled legislation making the controversial change. The Faculty of Advocates dismissed a claim by Alex Neil, the Health Minister, that the Marriage and Civil Partnership Bill contains “unequivocal protection” for those who refuse to participate in gay ceremonies.Neither are parents and teachers safe if they refuse to allow children to learn about same-sex marriage, the faculty said, as the legislation creates a public duty to “promote” the practice in the classroom.
