Americans see religion losing influence, but think more would be better

A new Gallup Poll shows 77 percent of Americans see religion losing influence in the United States, while 75 percent think it would be a good thing if more Americans were religious. But, the pollsters say, neither conclusion is "related to Americans' personal religiosity."For the sake of this poll – and many others – personal religiosity is measured according to church attendance or "the self-reported importance of religion in one's life."  (Is there a better measure?)What does seem to be a factor – though perhaps a minor one – is Americans' ideology and political party. The survey found that "liberals and Democrats (were) more likely than conservatives and Republicans to say religion is increasing in American society."
